Here's to the album (or albums) of 2007 that got our feet kicking and our ears bouncing from their beats. Let me hear yours.

Hip Hop is Dead
(actual release date: 19 Dec 06)
............the first Nas album I've liked. Great production, lyrics, album design. Great star presence.
Jay-Z
American Gangster
(06 Nov 07)
............Another peerless album from the greatest (mainstream) rapper alive.. Fewer bangin' beats, but great feel, great lyrics, as always.
Between the Buried and Me
Colors
(18 September 07)
.............This album was my first exposure to this group. Great math rock/ hardcore/ progressive metal music, with growls, harmonies, ten-minute epics, amazing musicianship and an addictive listenability.
Nine Inch Nails
Year Zero
(17 Apr 07)
...............It made up for the disappointing, "With Teeth," and then some. Trent dirties his hands with some political rhetoric and commentary, and the results are wonderful and eminently entertaining. Considering it was released almost on the heels of "With Teeth," instead of with years between discs, it is clear that Mr Reznor has reacquired his mojo. Damn good remix album, in Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D, too . . .
Melissa Etheridge
The Awakening
(25 Sep 07)
................Her best album since 1995's "Your Little Secret," if not since 1992's "Yes I Am"--and a psudo-concept album to boot--the title of the album is appropos, as it does indeed seem that Melissa has at last come to her senses to make some wonderful memorable folk rock music. Her recovery from cancer, and the greater appreciation for life that it endered, has apparently reinvigorated her. -

Don't tell me you never enjoyed or even bothere with "Illmatic" or even "God's Son". -
-
Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 8:19 AMNas never really impressed me, save for "Ether": and a couple of the other songs spawned by the beef with Jay-Z.
I own God's Son, and it's okay, but nothing to write home about. and when "illmatic" came out and everyone was riding his jock, I just failed to see what the big deal was.

Wed, January 2, 2008 - 5:56 AMHold on, how come nobody's mentioned Kanye West's "Graduation"? -
-
Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 8:21 AMWhat was so great about "Graduation"? It has a couple of amusing or catchy tracks, but . . . -

Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 8:31 AMI never really liked Kanye....hes no Immortal Technique -
-
Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 8:58 AMImmortal Technique is one of the greatest, perhaps . . . and few have heard of him because he's dismissive of major labels, likes to own his masters, etc . . .

Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Fri, January 4, 2008 - 5:57 AMMy one major quarrel with kanye is the fact that he's got an atitude problem, especially when it comes down to wining awards. -
-
Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Fri, January 4, 2008 - 5:00 PM> especially when it comes down to wining awards. <
I think you mean when he's ~not~ winning awards! Yup, he got him an ego. I'm surprised Chicago is big enough to hold it. -
-
Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Fri, January 4, 2008 - 5:07 PMI've never had a problem with musicians that had an attitude problem for the most part. Dylan and Sinatra had their fair share of attitude problems in their day, but I have no problem listening to their music.
As for Kanye, I really liked Late Registration, but Graduation just didn't grab my attention all that much. I still enjoy his music, though. -

Fri, January 4, 2008 - 9:02 PM>>Dylan and Sinatra had their fair share of attitude problems in their day, but I have no problem listening to their music.<<
comparing Dylan to Kanye is a stretch IMO
Dylan never wanted awards or recognition...he was thrust into his fame by what he chose to do..Kanye BELIEVES hes that great and whines when he doesnt win awards -
-
Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Sat, January 5, 2008 - 1:34 AMI wasn't attempting to compare Dylan to Kanye. There is no comparison, clearly. I'm just saying in their day they each had their own attitudes. Take another look at "Don't Look Back". It's not the most sympathetic portrayal of Dylan. Yes, your point about the awards and recognition is right, but Dylan did have a bit of a swagger about him when he was younger.
The point I was trying to make was an artist's attitude isn't going to sway me greatly from listening to their music. There have been a lot of jerks that have made a lot of great music.

Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Sat, January 5, 2008 - 6:24 AMdylan's swagger was almost in spite of everyone's thoughts on how he should be
Think of how it had to of been for a man like him to be put on a pedestal then taken off of it cause folk music bored him so he plugged in.
Ive seen Dont Look Back...Ive seen Eat the Document(documentary from the next year after plugging in) and Ive seen Scorsese's movie No Direction Home. Yes Bob Dylan had a swagger....but can you blame him?
Like watch how the press try to rip him apart in Dont Look Back...thay are practically baiting him and he wont cave in, so he starts to play with them...thats not his fault...Hes expected to be someoen else and its not working for him.
But I see your point I just dont think he was ever a jerk...and Kanye West always has been a jerk

Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 4:59 AMI believe that with "Graduation", he was more like trying to push the envelope on just how far Rap music has evolved into embracing Pop lyrics.

Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 4:02 PMWilco -- Sky Blue Sky
Spoon -- Ga Ga Ga Ga
I'm so glad Wilco moved away from the noodling road they were heading down. And I just discovered Spoon. Both are solid albums that I listen to a bunch.
Von Südenfed -- Tromatic Reflexxions
Proving that Mark E Smith can exist outside of The Fall.
You know, really, the stuff that made an impact on me in 2007 probably wasn't released in 2007. Betty Davis, Isobell Campbell and Mark Lanegan (LOVE this album), Robbie Fulks, and when was The Bird and the Bee's album released? Oh, but another favorite from 2007, which just came in under the, well, wire:
Wire -- Read and Burn 3

Re: Favourite Album/Albums of 2007
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 1:29 PMI haven't actually listened to all that much in the way of new albums this past year, but my short list would be:
Sky Blue Sky - Wilco
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Nick Lowe - At My Age
Radiohead - In Rainbows
I was really skeptical about the Radiohead album after Hail to the Thief, but I thought In Rainbows was just great. The Nick Lowe album is probably the one I listen to the most, though. -

Volta
(08 May 2007)
................Lush, spacious, imaginative, atmospheric, and brilliantly produced (several by Timbaland) with warm, rich horns, this disc, like many others by the Icelandic stunner, is a gem.

Did anyone listen to Bruce Springsteen's album of last year?
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 5:57 PMI listened to Springsteen's album. It has its moments, but in general, I was really disappointed. It's certainly not even close to the level of "The Rising" in my opinion. I really love Springsteen and this is the first album of his that hasn't really moved me in a long, long time. There are still some good tracks, but nothing that I found really exceptional. Also, the production was a little too glossy for my tastes. -
-

Sat, January 26, 2008 - 4:16 AMHow about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST? -

How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 1:36 PMI enjoyed it, but I don't listen to his acoustic albums nearly as much. I also enjoyed the Seeger Sessions, but again, don't listen to it as often. It's not that I don't like them as much as I'm not compelled to put them on as often. You certainly need to be in the right mood. -
-
Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 11:08 AMAll right, tell me which would you prefer: the anthemic Bruce Springsteen, or the introspective one? -
-
Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 11:11 AMI actually like both. It really depends on my mood. The anthemic stuff works better for live shows, I think. But I really love the introspective stuff too.
If I had to choose, I'd probably lean towards the anthemic Springsteen because that's what really moves me. -
-
Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 11:40 AMThough I haven't heard all of his albums, but since I recall you talking about "The Rising", you do know that album had both some bit of anthemic as well as introspective sounds in it.
Do you prefer him still being with the E Street Band, or when he's solo? -
-
Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 11:42 AMI think I'm solidly in the E Street Band camp. I still enjoy his solo work, but there's nothing like the sound of that band when they're on. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 11:54 AMWhich are your favourite albums of his? I know they're more than two, so let's hear it. -
-
Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 12:05 PMOK, we're waaaay off track of the original post, but my two favorites are probably Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town. I know, not the most original choices, but they're my favorites. I really love The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle too, but it's not quite up to the caliber of those other two.
The live album/DVD from the Hammersmith Odeon is just insane. One of the best recorded live shows I've ever heard by any artist. The DVD is in the Born to Run anniversary edition, but you can find the CD on sale separately. -

Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 12:13 PMYou don't enjoy Born In The U.S.A? -
-
Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 1:26 PMOh, I like Born in the USA quite a bit. It's probably fourth on my list. -
-

Fri, February 1, 2008 - 9:38 AMHow about LUCKY TOWN? -

Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 11:53 AMYeah, I like that too, although it's not too high on my list -
-
Re: How about the previous album: DEVILS + DUST?
